The world’s energy system is at a crossroads
| The global economy demands more energy, while the globe demands lower emissions. 50% of global emissions stem from energy production. Achieving the ambitious goal of creating a sustainable environment through low carbon solutions requires big changes in energy systems. The energy industry is facing rapid and radical changes to business conditions, market designs and policy instruments. These changes pose significant challenges for the energy industry, such as trading new instruments, understanding the interdependence of different energy and non-energy commodities and instruments, and changes in working processes, methods and tools. |
 |
The key to managing these changes and challenges and achieving world-class performance, is world-class competence.
Long experience and unique expertise in international competitive energy trading
Academia, energy trading industries and public authorities have all joined forces to create a network based upon solving these challenges by establishing a highly specialized international centre for R&D and education. In 1991 the Halden cluster developed the world’s first system for a competitive energy trading market. In 2005, this same cluster delivered the first system for emissions trading. For this work, in 2008 the Halden Centre of Expertise was awarded the Norwegian prize for ”Green IT”. New energy and IT-related businesses with clients world-wide have been established as spin-offs from the R&D activities associated with the Institute for Energy Technology and the OECD Halden Reactor Project. At the intersection between energy, engineering, IT and finance, the cluster of energy and technology-related businesses located in Halden has established solid international acceptance of its unique expertise.
Preparing for the future through green growth
NCE Halden provides its partners with the opportunity to develop critical competence in energy and emissions trading. We are now establishing unique masters and PhD studies and creating a scenario and simulation centre where our partners can test out new products, new strategies and market designs. We invite our partners, and our partners’ partners, to participate on research projects to discover innovative solutions and gain first access to new knowledge. Our partners play an active role in shaping the rules which govern the energy industry.
